Corey Ruiz was fatally shot by a Madison police officer on July 22, 2026. Wisconsin's Department of Justice is investigating the shooting. According to the DOJ information reported by Wisconsin Public Radio, Ruiz pulled out a knife during an attempted arrest, and the officer who shot him was injured.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. Four Madison officers were placed on leave while the Wisconsin Department of Justice investigates the incident.
The Ruiz family has also sought answers regarding his death. Their legal team has said an independent autopsy was conducted, with results expected to be released separately.

Visitation for Corey Ruiz was held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Fountain of Life Covenant Church, 633 W. Badger Road, Madison, Wisconsin. His funeral service followed at 11:00 a.m.
The Rev. Al Sharpton delivered the eulogy during the service, as family members, friends, and community members gathered to remember Corey.
